"Bush" referred back to the forests of Africa. "Meat" applies to all wild species of animal that live in the forests of Africa. The term "bushmeat" can be refer to those wildlife species of animal, including the threatened and endangered animals that became meat supplies. Some of the examples of animal that are threatened are:
- Elephants
- Gorillas
- Chimpanzees
- Antelopes
- Crocodiles
- Porcupines
- Etc...
Crisis
BCTF is most concerned with bushmeat that is illegally, commercially, or unsustainably derived from wildlife, including those characterized by:
- Illegal methods of hunting (wire snares, unregistered guns)
- Illegal species (endangered, threatened, or protected)
- Taken from unauthorized areas
- Unsustainable off take for commercial trade or non-commercial uses.
